Warm Bodies

Topic #4

I decided to do my second blog post on the most recent movie I have seen in theatres, Warm Bodies. The trailers play on TV and it focuses around Zombies which are a huge trend in movie society right now.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3ErWNBX9Rc   The link is the trailer.

Directed by Jonathan Levine, whose other work includes: 50/50, The Wackness and How to Make It in America. Not only directed the film but also helped to write the film, which I found interesting. The lead actor of Warm Bodies is Nicholas Hoult, who is an English actor best known in America for his role as Beast in X-Men First Class in 2011. Personally I know him as Tony, the star of Skins a UK series about rebellious teenagers and their lives. Until doing research, I had no idea Warm Bodies was based on a novel, but in fact it was. Warm Bodies is originally a novel by Isaac Marion. The idea of Warm Bodies is that R (Nicholas Hoult) is a zombie but he has thoughts and feelings and his quest to change after meeting his dream girl played by Teresa Palmer.

Based on Hoult’s other work Warm Bodies is somewhat similar, X-Men is also SiFi but Skins, which ran for seven seasons and is Nicholas’s longest running work. Is based around a group of English teenagers. I like Warm Bodies and thought it was interesting because it’s funny, it’s not the same zombie movie everyone expects like The Walking Dead or I am Legend, it’s in a league of its own.

I think this movie is important because it is so different and funny and is a zombie romantic comedy, I think it sheds a little light in the dark genre of zombies and flesh eating creatures. It definitely reflects the trend of supernatural and zombies, vampires. The target audience is young people for sure, that’s obvious just by watching it and checking out the people in the theatre. It actually breaks a lot of stereotypes because it is a zombie romantic comedy and it is about changing from a zombie to a human not the other way around. This is really interesting.

I think the good thing about this movie is that its different, it expands the audiences thinking about zombies and supernatural creatures. Its weakness would be although I loved it I can see how many people may not enjoy the film, it was funny but if it wasn’t funny it seemed a little boring at times. I don’t think it’s the best piece of work these actors have done, Nicolas has Skins and James Franco another star in the movie has 21 Jump Street which was hilarious. It was memorable to me, so I would say yes definitely it’s memorable and won’t be forgotten next week.

The critics of this movie are definitely split, as for the professional Richard Roeper he loves the film and you can read all about it in the review he wrote, http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20130130/REVIEWS/130139997/1023 he writes “I kinda love this movie” and describes it as “well-paced” and that it has a “terrific sense of humor” which I love and completely agree with. Although I read on the rotten tomato a bit of different reviews, http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/warm_bodies/ Although rotten tomatoes doesn’t provide professional opinions it provides real life relatable opinions which is why I think it’s important to know that some called it “luke-warm at best”

After watching the film I did look up Nicolas’s Hoult’s other work, it was interesting to see the new movies he has in pre-production. My friends really liked the movie, they went to see it with me and they laughed just as hard as I did.

For the most part I loved the movie, I thought it was funny, and fresh and different something needed in today’s world of violent slaying and action packed killer zombie movies. Although I can definitely see the other side of the coin as well, it wasn’t a box office hit and it won’t be remembered as one of the greatest movies of all time, but it’s something worth seeing if you want something light hearted and fun.
